Seton Hall drops Sacred Heart in sweep

Date: September 7, 2018

By Mat Mlodzinski

The Seton Hall Pirates defeated Sacred Heart in three sets in the first of three games in the Thunderdome Classic, hosted by UCSB.

The two SHU’s traded points for most of the first set, as Sacred Heart held on to an early 6-4 lead.  However, the Pirates showed grit, quickly regaining the lead, thanks to a Cherise Hennigan kill and two attack errors on the Pioneers.  After Sacred Heart tied it back up, the Pirates rallied for five straight points, going up 12-7. Sacred Heart played well for the remainder of the set, but Seton Hall didn’t lose much ground, taking it 25-19.

Set two was all Seton Hall, as the Pirates cruised to a 9-2 lead.  Sacred Heart never got within striking range, as the Pirates entire offense was on fire, with Maggie Cvelbar and Sophia Coffey leading the way.  The Hall did not look back, taking set two in dominate fashion, 25-14.

The Pirates started off hot again in the third set, taking a 12-4 advantage thanks to multiple kills from freshman Emilee Turner.  The Pioneers had very few answers for the Pirates, who never looked back, eventually taking it 25-12 to win in three straight sets.

Leading the Pirates in stats were Caitlin Koska (10 kills), Turner (7 kills), Coffey (19 assists), and Cvelbar (14 assists).  The Pirates played a very clean game, finishing with only 11 errors, compared to 22 from the Pioneers.

The win snaps a two game losing streak for Seton Hall, and also puts the Pirates above .500 at 4-3.  Seton Hall will play Texas Tech tomorrow at 1:00 P.M, followed by UCSB at 10:00 P.M. Both games can be seen on Bigwest.TV.
