The Seton Hall women’s basketball team suffered a low-scoring loss to the Georgetown Hoyas early Friday morning by the score of 51–43.

Despite the return of leading scorer and rebounder Shadeen Samuels, the Pirates gave up an 18-point third quarter lead to fall into ninth place in the Big East. Samuels was cleared for play but was said to be 50/50. Samuels scored six points and recorded a team-high seven rebounds.

The Pirates started the game on fire from three, as Samuels knocked a shot down early followed by Inja Butina who knocked down two form beyond the arc. Nicole Jimenez would contribute with a three-pointer of her own as the pirates headed into the second quarter up on Georgetown 16-3.  The Hoyas got into a groove, outscoring the Pirates 13-10 in the second quarter. The Pirates headed into halftime up 26-13.

The Pirates began the third quarter strong, thanks to a pair of shots from Whitney Howell and Jimenez. A free throw from Desiree Elmore would give them their largest lead of 18.

Momentum began to change, as Dionna White would score seven straight points to cut the deficit to 11. White would add a three-pointer, as the Hoyas would end the quarter on a 12-3 scoring run. The last bit of momentum for the Pirates came from a deep buzzer beating three from Samuels.

The fourth quarter began for the Hoyas with a made layup from their leading scorer Dorothy Adomako. Butina would respond immediately with an inside jumper. A layup from Morgan Smith would finally put Georgetown up 39-38 with 8:21 left in the game. The Pirates would then give possession away due to three turnovers in two minutes. Georgetown extended their lead to eight thanks to free throws from Smith and Adomako. The Pirates intentionally fouled to try and keep their hopes alive, but Georgetown would continue to knock free throw-after free-throw.

The buzzer sounded with the final score of 51-43. Despite the loss, Desiree Elmore continued to step up with a team high 17 points and 7 rebounds, tying with Samuels for leading rebounder. Butina and Jimenez tied for the team lead in assists with four. With loss, the Pirates fall to ninth place in the Big East, ahead of only Xavier. With the win, Georgetown enters a three-way tie for sixth in the Big East.

The Pirates head into their final two games of the season, having lost their last five matchups. WSOU will have coverage beginning at 12:45 as the team heads to Philadelphia to take on the Villanova Wildcats (16-9 Overall, 7-7 Conference) at 1:00 PM on Sunday, before their final matchup of the regular season against St. Johns.
