Date: November 3, 2017

By: Jose Feliciano

The Seton Hall Pirates returned to the Walsh Gymnasium and defeated the La Salle Explorers in an exhibition matchup 87-74. The Pirates were led by Desi Rodriguez, who dropped 22 points and was 3-5 on 3-pointers. Four of the Seton Hall starting five scored at least 10 points, with Angel Delgado only scoring six points on the day. Delgado did lead the team in rebounds with nine.

The beginning of the first half was electric for Seton Hall as, after giving up a field goal to La Salle on the first possession, went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a Michael Nzei dunk on a Myles Powell assist. Powell stole a pass later in the half and finished strong at the rim with a one-handed slam on the fastbreak. Rodriguez was the next Pirate to show up on the highlight reel after finishing an alley-oop pass from Jordan Walker, who was playing in his first game in a Pirate uniform after being a four-star recruit from The Patrick School.

The Explorers played a much more efficient game in the second half, actually outscoring the Pirates 47-43 after only scoring 27 points in the first half. La Salle managed to cut the Seton Hall lead to six with just seven minutes remaining. Soon after, the Pirates broke out with a 7-0 run, highlighted with a steal from Carrington who dished it out to Rodriguez on the fastbreak who got the layup while drawing a foul. The final play of the game was a big slam from Myles Cale on a pass from Jordan Walker after he intercepted a La Salle pass and began the fastbreak.

Seton Hall was efficient shooting the basketball today, finishing with a team field goal percentage of 57.6% while hitting 42.1% of their 3-pointers. Even the big guys hit some threes as Sandro Mamukelashvili and Ismael Sanogo each connected from behind the arc. The Pirates shot 73.3% from the free throw line, a stat they would like to see improve after dealing with free throw struggles the last couple years.

This exhibition was set up to raise awareness and help aid the hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. All net proceeds from the game will be donated to United for Puerto Rico.

It was a good tune-up for the Pirates and they will get another tune-up game before they begin the regular season at the Prudential Center. They will face LIU Post this Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the Walsh Gymnasium at 4 p.m. Catch all the action on 89.5 FM WSOU.
