The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (10-7 overall, 3-3 conference) fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles (12-4 overall, 3-2 conference) in Milwaukee, 81-60.

Marquette was picked to finish ninth in the Big East pre-season poll while the Pirates were picked finish third, but Marquette looked more like the higher ranked team in the matchup on Sunday. It wasn’t all Marquette throughout the entire game. Seton Hall finished the first quarter with a 24-19 lead. Barbara Johnson did it all for the Pirates in the first half as she finished the half with 15 points.

She got the majority of her points driving to the basket, while she also drained one shot from behind the arc. The Pirates as a whole shot better in the first quarter (52.9% from the field) than they did in the second (28.6%).

For the Golden Eagles in the first half, it was Selena Lott with 13 points. It was the second quarter when Marquette started to take over on offense while Seton Hall couldn’t keep up and struggled to get good shots as they scored 10 points in the second quarter. Despite the Hall’s bad shooting in the second quarter, they went into halftime down only four points.

Marquette came running out of the gate in the second half and absolutely dominated the Pirates. The Golden Eagles made half their shots throughout the entire second half and even made 60% of their shots in the fourth quarter.

Altia Anderson dominated the Pirates as she scored 15 points in the half alone. She was able to drive to the lane and finish the tough lay ups. Anderson also went to the free throw line five times in the half and effectively drew fouls on the Seton Hall bigs.

Desiree Elmore ended up fouling out late in the fourth quarter, which hurt the Pirates and showed how effectively Marquette was able to get into the paint. For the Pirates, it was Mya Jackson who stepped up by getting to the charity stripe three times and making five of the six free throws. Johnson ended up finishing up with 20 points for the Pirates, but it wasn’t enough as Marquette continued to roll on offense as Lott finished with 19 points and Camryn Taylor finished the game with 23 points.

A big story before the game was that Shadeen Samuels was supposed to play a limited role in the game, but she ended up playing 29 minutes in the game. Seton Hall head coach Tony Bozzella would not say what the reason that was for, but it didn’t matter as Samuels still played a good number of minutes.

It was a disappointing perfomrance by Samuels as she only scored six points, grabbed six boards, and finished the game with six points. It may make you think if Samuels is dealing with an injury because of her unusually poor performance and coach Bozzella saying she was supposed to play a limited role.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action this Friday, Jan. 17, as they host the Creighton Bluejays (12-4 overall, 4-1 conference) at 11 a.m. in historic Walsh Gymnasium. 89.5 FM WSOU will have coverage of the game starting at 10:45 a.m.
