Seton Hall baseball falls to Virginia in game two, 4-0

Date: March 3, 2019

By Scotti Cesa

After a shutout victory earlier in the day, the Seton Hall Pirates dropped the second game of their doubleheader, losing to the Virginia Cavaliers 4-0.

Cole Patten got the start today for the Hall but did not last long. Virginia’s bats came out early as Tanner Morris’s ground rule double brought in Zack Gelof from second, giving the Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead in the first. After a solo home run from Devin Ortiz in the second inning, Rob Sheppard pulled Patten from the game. Patten lasted 1 1/3 innings and allowed four runs, only two earned.

Tyler Burnham came in to replace Patten, looking to get Seton Hall out of a big jam. Nevertheless, a series of base hits for the Cavaliers would give them a 4-0 lead, all they would need to defeat the Pirates.

Griff McGarry started for the Cavaliers, whose six scoreless innings and eight strikeouts were too much for the Pirates to handle. Virginia’s pitching struck out 11 batters and only allowed five hits.

Seton Hall had plenty of chances to get back in the game but fell short against Virginia’s dominant pitching. The Pirates left two runners stranded in the third and fourth innings and left one runner in scoring position in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Despite the loss, the bullpen was a bright spot for the Pirates today. After Patten’s ugly start, Seton Hall saw three relievers pitch lights out against Virginia. Tyler Burnham pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, followed by David Festa and Blake Espinal who each threw 2 scoreless innings.

The Pirates are now 1-6 and will need to get the bats going tomorrow, as they look to bounce back and take two of three from the Cavaliers.
