Date: May 22, 2015

By: Kevin Huebler

Seton Hall baseball stayed alive in the Big East Tournament with a 5-1 win over the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday. Senior pitcher Anthony Elia started for the Pirates, dominating the Hoyas’ hitters throughout the day.

Elia gave up a leadoff homerun to the first batter of the game in Ryan Busch. Busch took Elia deep down the leftfield line for his seventh homerun of the season.

That was all the offense for the Hoyas on the afternoon, as Elia faced the minimum number of batters over the next 6.1 innings.

Seton Hall got the run back in the bottom of the first, tying the score when D.J. Ruhlman scored on a wild pitch by Georgetown starter Matt Hollenbeck. Ruhlman roped a one out double to left-centerfield and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Hollenbeck before scoring.

The Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sal Annunziata reached base to lead off the inning for the Pirates, reaching on an error by the shortstop Ryan Busch. Annunziata then stole second base to get into scoring position, and advanced to third on Hollenbeck’s third wild pitch of the afternoon before scoring on Ryan Ramiz’s two out triple. Ramiz came around to score on yet another wild pitch by Hollenbeck giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead after four innings.

Hollenbeck’s day was done after that, finishing with 4.0 innings pitched, giving up 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and striking out 3.

Tom Davis came on in relief of Hollenbeck in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and nobody on Annunziata lifted a solo homerun over the left-centerfield fence to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead after five innings.

The Pirates added a final insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Derek Jenkins reached base to lead off the inning, reaching on another error by Busch. Jenkins came around to score from first on an RBI double to right field by the next batter, Zach Weigel, giving Seton Hall a 5-1 lead.

Elia finished with a complete game, giving up 1 run, 4 hits, and no walks. He finished with a career high 9 strikeouts.

Ramiz and Ruhlman each finished with two hits on the day. Annunziata also scored two runs for the Pirates.

The Pirates are back on the diamond on Saturday at 4:30 in another elimination game when they will take on the loser of Friday night’s Creighton/St. John’s game.
