Pirates stunned by Providence at home 1-0 in 2OT

Date: October 12, 2018

The Seton Hall Pirates lost to Providence 1-0 in double overtime on Friday night.

The first half was physical throughout, including the yellow card that was given to Gabriel Viola in the 12th minute. One minute later, Nico Andersen received a yellow card after he collided with Friar goal keeper Colin Martin.

In the 16th minute of the first half, Pirate Forward JP Marin nearly scored as his shot ricocheted off of the cross bar. Five minutes later, CJ Tibbling nearly scored as well with a shot that hit off of the left post. The first half ended scoreless, as both teams attempted two shots respectively.

The second half continued to be a physical contest as five fouls were called within the first ten minutes of the half. Providence nearly took the lead in the 57th minute as Ramzi Qawasmy attempted a header shot but had too much height on it to score.

Carlton Mackenzie was involved in a shoving match that escalated into Mackenzie head-butting a Providence player. Mackenzie was subsequently given a red card and ejected from the match. When discussing Mackenzie’s ejection coach Lindberg said that “Carlton did not want to get involved in that situation but he was in the heat of the moment. Unfortunately, our team loses our leader for the next game because of the red card.”

The game continued on into double overtime periods, as Tiago Mendonca of Providence scored the game winning goal in the 101st minute. That game winner was Mendonca’s fifth of the season.

The Pirates attempted five shots on the night compared to Providence’s 13 attempts. Coach Lindberg addressed his takeaways from his team’s performance tonight; “We did a nice job of rotating in substitutes and getting fresh legs in the game. We were very aggressive but we can definitely improve on offense with moving the ball around better.”

The Pirates fall to (4-4-2) on the season and look to rebound against New Jersey rival NJIT at home on Tuesday night at 6:30 P.M.
