The Seton Hall Pirates baseball team secured their second win in the current series against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, the final score 5-1 due to strong defense on the mound.

Coming off a long, extra inning battle in the series opener the day before in which the Pirates won 9-8, the Pirates limited the Hawaii offense to five only hits. After the first two innings went scoreless, the Pirates and Rainbow Warriors both scored in the third inning and were tied at 1. The top of the fourth brought back-to-back bunt singles from senior Ryan Ramiz and sophomore Tyler Shelder-McAvoy and allowed first baseman Connor Hood to send both runners home, hitting a two-RBI triple to give the Pirates the lead, 3-1.

Insurance runs in both the fifth and ninth innings were helpful, but career-best performances from sophomores Billy Layne, Jr. and Noah Thompson sealed this convincing win for the Pirates. Starting pitcher Layne, who picked up his first win of the season, matched his career-high five innings pitched, only allowing one run to cross the plate. That allowed Thompson to enter in the sixth and come up with a career-best six strikeouts and two walks to pick up his first save of the season.

The Pirates, who now improve their record to 9-9-1, look to pick up their third straight win in this series as they continue their exhibition with Hawaii tonight starting at 7:05pm EST (1:05 HT).
