Pirates Swept in Doubleheader against Butler

Date: March 30, 2018

By: Dalton Allison

The first two games of a trip to Indianapolis bore no fruit for the Seton Hall Pirates, as they fell to the Butler Bulldogs 8-5 in the first game, and were shutout 6-0 in the second game.

In the top of the first inning of the first game, the Pirates were able to jump out of the gate with early offense. After back to back singles that each drove in a run with the bases loaded from Hailey Arteaga and Baylee Allender, Destini Peck laced a single up the middle to drive in two. That gave the Pirates a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Bulldogs came out in their half of the inning determined to earn runs back, and they did exactly that off of Pirates starter Madison Strunk. Between a one run single, a one run double, and a two run triple by Kaitlin Doud to cap things off, the Bulldogs were able to tie the game at four in the bottom of the first.

After another RBI single from Arteaga in the top of the second out the Pirates ahead 5-4, the Bulldogs began to dig in on Pirate pitching.

The Bulldogs were able to scratch out two runs on a single and sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second, pushing them ahead 6-5, and knocking Strunk out of the game.

While the bats of the Pirates were done for the day, the Bulldogs kept bringing the power. Another triple by Doud put Butler ahead 8-5 in the fifth inning, which would go on to be the final score.

The second game didn't get any better for the Pirates, as their bats went on an early Easter break.

The starter for the Bulldogs, Alyssa Graves allowed only one hit to the Pirates during her 5.2 innings of work, a single to Sara Foster. This would be the only hit for the Pirates in the second game.

Seton Hall starter Reganne Camp was able to hold Butler scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when a single and a pair of sacrifices put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0.

The Bulldogs tacked on an additional 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 6-0, which would eventually become the final score.

Following the pair of losses, the Pirates Big East record fell to 0-5, and they fall to 14-21 overall. They finish off the series against Butler on Saturday at 11 am.
