The Seton Hall women’s soccer team (1-5-1) lost a close 2-1 match to the Delaware Blue Hens (5-4) in Newark, Delaware, on Sunday.

It did not take long for the Blue Hens to get going in the first half as Sara D’Appolino scored her second goal of the season in the third minute of the game off a short pass from her teammate Riley Dixon. 20 seconds later, Laura Hooper shot the ball to the back of the net for the Pirates to even the score 1-1. Hooper shot from the right side of the field after Cassy Harrigan passed the ball to Hooper five yards away the from the net.

Throughout the rest of the first half, both teams were very aggressive as they both tallied up fouls. Neither team could find separation but out of the two teams, Delaware was the closest to setting themselves a part. The Blue Hens had several opportunities score that were called back due to players being offsides. Delaware also had several corner kicks and shots close to the goal that they failed to capitalize on while the Hall was playing more defensive throughout the later parts of the first half.

That same theme carried into the second half as both teams were still going back and forth. Both teams were still piling up the fouls as the aggression kept going, but again it was Delaware who failed to capitalize on several opportunities to put the ball in the net.

The Blue Hens had 13 shots, which forced Seton Hall to play on the more defensive side. The Pirates were limited to only four shots in the whole second half with Hooper and Harrigan each having two. Neither team was able to breakthrough and score in the game forcing overtime with a score of 1-1.

In the first overtime, neither team was able to put the ball in the net even though the Blue Hens dominated the offensive side of the ball. Seton Hall did not have a single shot in the first overtime while Delaware had five along with two corner kicks, but the Pirate defense remained strong and was able to hold off Delaware’s aggressive offensive attack.

Delaware was still dominating the offensive side of the ball in the second overtime. The Pirates remained strong on defense until the 109th minute where Dani Kabat scored the game-winning goal for the Blue Hens. Kabat nailed the shot from 10 yards out on the left side of the goal giving Delaware the 2-1 win and getting her first goal of her senior season.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Sunday, September 29 as they start off Big East play against the Butler Bulldogs at Owen T. Carroll Field at 1:00 p.m.
