The Seton Hall Pirates extended their losing streak to eight games after a 4-0 loss to the DePaul Blue Demons.

The Pirates entered this game searching for their second win of the season and their first in-conference win of the season. This was the Blue Demons’ sixth win of the season and their third in-conference win this season.

In the first half, it was all Blue Demons. Morgan Turner of DePaul got the first half started when she scored a goal that swished into the upper left corner of the net in the 10th minute of the match. A corner kick in the 17th minute of the match resulted in a goal for Jade Russo of the Blue Demons. Turner scored her second goal of the match in the 25th minute of the match, giving the Blue Demons a 3-0 lead over the Pirates. Finally, in the 33rd minute, Bina Saipi scored a header off another Blue Demons corner kick and gave them a 4-0 lead over the Pirates.

To add insult to injury, Laura Hooper, who leads the Pirates in goals this season and one of three players to start all 13 games this year, left the match with an injury late in the first half. Hooper did return though and played most of the second half.

The Pirates finished the first half with just two shots on goal, one from Hooper and one from Marisa Difonso. The Pirates first good look at the goal came early in the second half, when Izzy Engel missed just left after a shot inside the goal area. Unfortunately, that was the only shot on goal by the Pirates in the second half.

The Pirates switched gears defensively in the second half though, not allowing any goals and only five shots on goal opposed to the nine they allowed in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Blair Currie did her part, saving four shots on goal in the first half, while fellow freshman keeper Harpa Johannsdottir saved one shot on goal in the second half.

The Pirates could not seem to keep possession of the ball for most of the match. DePaul had possession for nearly 90 percent of the match and outmatched the Pirates in moving the ball and getting to open spots on the field. This marks the second straight game the Pirates have been shutout and the Pirates only have five goals in total on the season.

The Pirates’ next game will be in South Orange on Thursday, October 24, against the 8-5-2 Creighton Bluejays. Hopefully first-year head coach Ciara Crinion and the Pirates can finish off the season strong, as the Pirates have just three regular season games left on the schedule.
