Date: September 6, 2019

Seton Hall started the Seton Hall Classic off with a loss, as they were swept by North Arizona University 3-0.

Seton Hall unfortunately could not pick up a win or a set today against North Arizona University (12-25, 20-25, 10-25). Their home opener started off with a loss. They start the Seton Hall classic off with a three-set loss against the reigning Big Sky Conference Champions.

In the first set, the Pirates started things off on the right foot picking up the first point of the match due to a service error on the Lumberjacks. This would be one of the only leads the pirates held throughout the match as NAU quickly responded back to take a 5-2 lead over the Pirates.

The Hall took a timeout down 9-4 and in between their first and second timeout gave up eight points and were only able to score four. The Pirates would ultimately drop their first set by a score of 25-12 and would look to bounce back in the second set.

The second set was the most competitive for Seton Hall, as they had things tied up early in the second set 3-3 thanks to a service ace from Grace Rosenberg. Rosenberg’s ace was one of two in the contest. This was really when the crowd at Walsh Gymnasium started to get going as they trailed by just two, and the score was 7-5.

The Pirates fought hard in this set as they would often find themselves down and then respond back bringing and making things close. While the second set was the Pirates’ most competitive, they lost it by a score of 25-20 and put themselves in a 2-0 set hole.

The Pirates again started off the third set with the lead off of a service error on the Lumberjacks giving the Hall a 1-0 lead, as they hoped to pick up a set win to keep the match alive. Early in the set, the Pirates were going toe to toe with the the Lumberjacks even holding another one-point lead of 5-4 in that third set.

That would unfortunately be the last lead that Seton Hall would hold as North Arizona would go on 5-0 run to give themselves a 9-5 lead. After this, Seton Hall struggled to get any offense going because they lost the final set 25-12.

The Pirates will look to bounce back later on tonight as the Seton Hall Classic continues with the Pirates next matching up against the La Salle Explorers (1-2) at 7 p.m. The Seton Hall Classic will conclude tomorrow when Seton Hall first takes on the Binghamton Bearcats (0-3) at 11 a.m. Finally, Seton Hall finishes things off with a match against the Northeastern Huskies (1-2) and all the games can be heard on wsou.net.
