Pirates let lead slip, fall at Providence 82-75

The Seton Hall women’s basketball team let loose of an early lead, as they lost to Providence 82-75 on Friday night in Alumni Hall.

 

Jovana Nogic knocked down a jumper with 1:38 into the game to give the Friars an early 3-0 advantage over the Pirates. Shadeen Samuels accounted for all of the Pirates’ first six points, and Seton Hall took a 6-5 lead after Samuels scored a layup with 6:20 in the first quarter. Kaela Webb sank a jumper in the final seconds of the first quarter to tie the game up at 21 going into the second.

 

Inja Butina gave the Pirates a 24-23 lead at the 7:41 mark in the second quarter. With 2:54 left, Nicole Jimenez hit a jumper from the left wing to make the score 36-28. 33 seconds later, Kyra Spiwak’s made three-point shot pulled the Friars within five points, 36-31. Seton Hall would finish out the half on top of Seton Hall 40-31 with Kaela Hilaire’s layup.

 

Butina drained a three-pointer at the 7:51 point in the third quarter to put the Pirates up 46-35. Desiree Elmore used her dominant presence in the paint to score a layup with 3:17, which put the Pirates ahead 56-45. Providence’s Maddie Jolin hit two free throws after she was fouled by Butina with 2:12 to go. Chanell Williams’s layup with 24 seconds remaining cut into the Pirates lead and the Friars trailed 56-53.

 

Providence commandeered the Pirates’ advantage after Jolin sank a three-pointer to make the score 58-56, 13 seconds into the quarter. Jovana Nogic extended the Friars’ lead to 64-59 at the 7:26 mark. Mary Baskerville’s layup kept the Pirates at bay, as the score turned to 72-66. Two free throws with 16 seconds iced the game away for the Friars. Providence went on to defeat Seton Hall 82-75.  

 

Desiree Elmore finished the game with a team-high 22 points and six rebounds. Samuels scored 17 points and added eight rebounds. Seton Hall shot 42.5% from the field and went 24.1% from distance.


Seton Hall falls to a 14-9 record and a 6-6 Big East record. The Pirates will travel to Omaha, Nebraska, to take on the Creighton Bluejays on Sunday at 2 p.m.
