Pirates Late Rally Comes Up Short Against UMass Lowell

Date: September 14, 2017

By: Evando Thompson

The Seton Hall women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the UMass Lowell River Hawks in Lowell, Massachusetts Thursday evening.

At first glance, the score would have one to think this was a lopsided affair with UMass Lowell easily taking the victory. However, the Pirates had a total of 13 shots with eight on goal, while UMass Lowell had 11 shots with a total of seven on goal. History seemed to repeat itself as Seton Hall failed to capitalize on chances.

The Pirates found themselves playing catch-up for much of the match. UMass Lowell managed to put one in the back of the net just one minute into the match. The game was well balanced as the half went on, as The Hall went into the locker room trailing by a goal.

After several attempts to strike at goal throughout the game, the Pirates received a corner kick with just under 12 minutes to go in the game. Lauren Hill attempted the corner, it reached Lauren Dao who assisted Julia Stirpe for the game-tying goal as the ball escaped the goalie's hands. Stirpe's clutch goal was her first of the season.

Just when the Pirates seemed to have flipped the switch, UMass Lowell answered with another goal two minutes after.

Towards the game's end, as the Pirates pressed to attempt to tie the game again, the River Hawks pushed on an attack which resulted in a goal to make the score 3-1.

The record may not show it, but a majority of The Hall's game have been close in margin. This loss is only the second time this season that the Pirates have suffered a loss by multiple goals; all of the other games have been decided by one or it resulted in a draw.

Up next for the Seton Hall women's soccer team is a home game, Sep. 17, where they take on the Harvard Crimson at Owen T. Carroll Field, Sunday at 1 p.m. Catch the action on wsou.net.
