Seton Hall won their opening game of the Kissimmee Irish Classic, in Kissimmee Florida on Friday by a score of 14-9 over Seattle University. The Pirates improve to 3-4 on the season with the victory.

Senior Shane McCarthy started the game on the mound for Seton Hall but had a rough time as he gave up three runs in the first inning of the game. The Pirates were able to get a run back in the second thanks to a Casey Dana triple, and a Ryan Ramiz sac-fly. McCarthy went back out for the second inning and faced trouble again as he got stuck in a bases loaded jam but was able to force a double play and get out of it. Seton Hall got another run back after Casey Dana was hit by a pitch and forced home Al Molina.

In the fourth inning Seton Hall was finally able to take the lead as they scored two runs, thanks to a Mike Alescio sac fly, and a Matt Toke double. Tyler Burnham started the third inning for the Pirates after McCarthy struggle over the first two and started off very well as he put away the first six batters he faced while also recording three strikeouts. He ran into some trouble in his third inning of relief however as Seattle took the lead back with a four run fifth inning.

After a scoreless sixth inning from both teams Seton Hall started off the seventh inning with a Sebastiano Santorelli fielder’s choice that scored Mike Alescio. Nick Dabrio followed that up with a two run single to tie the game at seven, and Dabrio would eventually score on a Ryan Ramiz double to give the Pirates the lead. This lead was short lived however as Seattle would tie the game up in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

The Pirates offense exploded in the eighth inning as they put up six runs on four hits to re-take the lead and distance themselves from Seattle. Alescio and Santorelli both had run scoring singles in the inning while Dabrio’s double also added a run for the Pirates. Seton Hall finished the eighth inning leading by a score of 14-8 after Corey Sawyer came on to pitch the bottom half of the inning and held Seattle scoreless. Seton Hall trusted Matt Ponsiglione with closing out the game and despite letting the first three batters reach base, he settled down and finished the game only allowing one run.

Seton Hall improved to 3-4 on the season with the victory over Seattle, and they play their next game on Saturday March, 3rd when they take on Notre Dame at 2:30 PM. Check back in to wsou.net for a recap of the game.
