Pirates get swept in D.C by Georgetown

Date: September 26, 2018

By Rich Behan

The Women’s Volleyball Team fell in straight sets to Georgetown on Wednesday night 25-21, 25-16, and 25-18. Senior Abby Thelen was a dominant force yet again, recording 14 kills. This is Thelen’s second straight match with double-digit kills. That was about it for the Pirates offense, however, as the team accumulated a measly .170 hitting percentage through the three sets. The Pirates also committed 16 attack errors, compared to Georgetown’s 9.

Sophomore Lizzy Sottung was another bright spot for the Pirates, recording 11 digs in the match. This is her second straight match with double-digit digs. This can be credited to Coach Allison Yaeger moving Sottung to Libero in the fourth set vs. Xavier last Saturday night. The Pirates looked much better defensively after the switch, and one must figure that Sottung will continue to get reps at the position moving forward.

No other Pirate besides Thelen recorded more than five kills in the game, but Cherise Hennigan, Haylee Gasser, and Amanda Rachwal all had solid matches. Hennigan and Rachwal recorded 4 and 3 kills, respectively. Haylee Gasser recorded 4 kills and a team-high five blocks, while recording no attack errors.

With the loss, the Pirates fall to 5-12 overall and 0-4 in conference play on the season, while Georgetown improves to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in conference. These teams will meet again on October 19th inside Walsh Gymnasium.

The Pirates will again search for their illusive first conference win this Saturday, September 29th, when they are back in action against St. John’s inside Carnesseca Arena at 5 pm.
