Pirates Falter Late in Loss to Georgetown

After keeping close through three quarters, the Pirates were outscored 24-10 in the fourth quarter in a 71-52 loss to Georgetown on Friday afternoon.
The Pirates started off slow allowing for Georgetown to take the lead early. At the end of the first quarter Georgetown led 16-13 over Seton Hall. This trend would continue into the second quarter where Georgetown would build upon this momentum and peaked their lead at 10 points with a score of 34-24 over the Pirates.
The Pirates struggled with turnovers with eight in the first half which contributed to the deficit. The Hall also struggled from behind the arc, connecting on just one of their seven first half three-point attempts. Inja Butina led in the offensive attack finishing the first half with six points, Jayla Jones-Pack nabbed five, and Selena Philoxy and Kaela Hilaire both scored four. The Pirates did have a higher field goal percentage at 42 percent in contrast to the Hoyas who shot 40 percent.
The third quarter was opened up rapidly by the Hoyas leading to a 4:30 stretch with no baskets from the Pirates. After the drought, Inja Butina responded with a three-point strike followed by a Kaela Hilaire lay-up. The Pirates scored 16 points in the third quarter which would be the Pirates highest scoring quarter of the game. At the end of the third quarter, the Pirates closed the gap to a five point difference.
It was the fourth quarter where the Hoyas ultimately ran away with the game outscoring the Pirates 24-10. In the fourth quarter the Pirates went over six minutes without scoring from the field. A number of issues were evident for this Pirates team on the day, but the standout was the lack of scoring and the loss in the battle for rebounds 41-37.
Butina led the Pirates in scoring with 13 points, while JaQuan Jackson was held in check with only four points. Dionna White and Cynthia Petke both had stand out performances for Georgetown, scoring 21 points 17 points, respectively. The Hall will conclude the weekend on the road on Sunday when they take on Villanova. Catch all the action on 89.5 FM WSOU.
