St. John’s got the better of Seton Hall this past Sunday as the Red Storm defeated the Hall 82-66.

The Red Storm started their dominant performance early in the 1st quarter as they went on a 5-0 scoring run to start off the game. As the early game continued, the shots for the Pirates were not falling their way at all and the Johnnies did not let up on the gas as they continued. Even with a three by Mya Jackson and points by Samuels, the momentum was not enough to make a change for the Hall.

The Pirates then started off the second quarter playing catch up, while the Red Storm continued to play aggressive and the Hall could not adjust to them on either side of the ball. Yet the Pirates also had many chances to either score or change the momentum, yet they weren’t capitalizing on any of it.

Unlucky shots continued for the Pirates as the score quickly turned to 32-20 with 3 minutes left in the half. And not for lack of trying the Pirates tried switching it up as much as possible. Desiree Elmore and Shadeen Samuels throw some points on the board to change the momentum, and the Pirates shortened the lead to 32-24.

The Johnnies continued their dominant offense to end the half 40-30. They were able to hold Samuels to just 11 points while junior guard Qadashah Hoppie continued setting the pace on the offensive side of the ball with 13 points at the end of the half.  The Red Storm started this half similar to the first one as they went on a 9-0 scoring run as the Pirates continued to miss easy shots and have the pace of the game set by the Johnnies.

Yet things started to turn as St. John’s started making little mistakes with fouls and the Hall started to change the momentum with a buzzer shot by Lewis and a breakaway from Samuels. But that didn’t last long as the Red Storm extended their lead to 20 points with 3:30 left to go in the third quarter. Pirates inched the lead away little by little until the end of the third when it became 63-41.

When the fourth quarter began, most people had lost hope and believed it was going to be a blowout, yet the Pirates came out of the huddle with a new game plan and changed it all. The Hall went on a 7-0 scoring run to start out the quarter and then an altercation between senior guard Alissa Alston and Samuels was the best thing to happen for the Pirates.

The Red Storm received a technical, Alexis Lewis went to the line for the Pirates, and they got the ball back. A foul resulted and Samuels went to the line for two making it a 10-0 scoring run.

Back to back steals from the Pirates shortened the Johnnies lead to 63-54, with a Lewis 3 following that to make it 63-57. As defense chants became pounding inside Walsh, the Pirates took advantage and made it 66-59

Yet it wasn’t enough as the Red Storm continued to set the pace in the last two minutes of the game. St. John’s defeated the Pirates 82-66. Samuels led the Pirates with 24 points and 12 rebounds as Hoppie led the Red Storm with 20 points.

Seton Hall will travel to Washington D.C. to take on Georgetown this Friday, Jan. 31. Tipoff time will be at 7 p.m. so make sure to tune into 89.5 WSOU FM for the call from Bob Towey and Ronny Castaneda.
