Pirates fall to Harvard 6-2

Date: March 17, 2019

By Evando Thompson

After winning their first game against Harvard on Friday, the Seton Hall baseball team came up on the short end of the stick with a 6-2 loss to the Crimson on Saturday morning, in their last game at Snowbird Classic.

The Pirates looked to carry over the momentum from their 7-4 win from the previous day, as sophomore centerfielder Tyler Shedler-McAvoy got on base with his lead-off triple in the top of the first inning. Scoring in a familiar way as they did in previous games, Shedler-McAvoy was able to reach home plate on a wild pitch.

The one-run lead was short-lived however, as the Hall suffered costly second and fourth innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Pirates allowed back-to-back singles that put two batters on base. A third Harvard batter reached base on an error. The third single in the inning for Harvard was the one that took the lead as they were able to drive in two runs.

Junior first baseman Matt Toke and junior second baseman Connor Hood both reached base with their singles in the top of the third inning, but the Pirates could not capitalize on the scoring opportunity as senior designated hitter Nick Santorelli grounded out.

Harvard proceeded to score in the bottom of the fourth inning on three different at-bats. Seton Hall now trailed by four going into the fifth inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Pirates got another run on the board but it was too little, too late.

The score did not fully indicate the respectable game the Pirates played in the latter half of the game. Seton Hall held Harvard to one run over the last 4.1 innings of the game that their bullpen pitched.

Sophomore reliever Hunter Waldis pitched a hitless and career-high 3.1 innings of relief.

Seton Hall snapped a six-game streak of scoring at least four runs, as the bats were not as hot in this game. The Pirates leave the five-game Snowbird Classic series with a bit of momentum at 2-3.

After the two-week stay in Florida, the Seton Hall baseball team will return to the northeast to take on Wagner College. First pitch is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, at 3:30 p.m.
