After pulling out a big win in their series opener against Liberty on Friday, the Pirates fell to the Flames, 3-2, on Saturday.

Starter Noah Thompson captured the loss, bringing his record down to 0-1. However, he had a great performance, throwing for 6.2 innings, six strikeouts, and only allowing one earned run. The other two were brought in on Seton Hall’s two errors.

Unfortunately, the hitting brought the Pirates down today, as they could only amass five hits while striking out eight times in the Flames’ solid day from the rubber. Casey Dana continued his good start to the season, as he went 1-4 with a double and an RBI, bringing his average on the season to .292.

The Pirates went down 1-0 in the third inning until the top of the fourth when Dana grounded back to the pitcher to bring in a run. A solo home run from Liberty’s Brady Gulakowski and another unearned run put Liberty up 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, and then the bats went quiet up until the top of the ninth.

After a Steve Grober double while the Pirates were down to their final out, Jake Pokrovsky came in to pinch hit for Thomas Holdorf. Pokrovsky singled to centerfield, bringing in the pinch runner Will Gale to make it a one run game. Dana flied out for the final out of the afternoon.

With Saturday afternoon’s loss, Seton Hall drops to 3-2 on the season since their 2-1 start with wins against Illinois and Milwaukee on the campus of Wake Forest. They will close out their weekend series in Lynchburg, Va., on Sunday against Liberty before a road trip in California next week when they face USC, Fresno State, and St. Mary’s.

Sophomore David Festa is projected to get the start on Sunday. This season he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA after a 6.1 inning outing against Milwaukee last weekend in which he surrendered no earned runs on four hits and five strikeouts. Sunday’s matchup will be at 1:00 p.m.
