Pirates Fall in Straight Sets to Open VCU Invitational
Date: September 15, 2017By: Chris Schweitzer
The Seton Hall Pirates volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Northwestern Wildcats today to fall to a 6-5 record on the season.
The Pirates played their best in the first set as they were leading 14-9 at one point, but an 8-0 run by the Wildcats buried the Pirates and gave Northwestern a 17-14 lead that they would eventually turn into a 25-21 win in the first set.
The second set didn't start off as good for the Pirates, however they were much more consistent than they were in the first. With neither team able to get a big lead at any point during second set, the four point cushion the Wildcats won the set with was the largest of the whole set and the Pirates were able to keep much closer throughout most of the set. Unfortunately for the Pirates they still fell 25-21 in the second set and went down 2-0 in the match to Northwestern.
The Pirates fell behind early in the third set and weren't able to make up the deficit. At one point in the third set they were down by a score of 21-10 and they would eventually fall to the Wildcats by a score of 25-14.
It wasn't all bad for the Pirates as Abby Thelen had another impressive performance, leading the way for Seton Hall with 11 kills. She was also second on the team with eight digs, trailing only Sarah Kenneweg who had 13.
The Seton Hall Pirates fall to a 6-5 record now on the season and face a double header tomorrow as they face VCU Rams at 1:00 PM and the Bowling Green Falcons at 4:30PM.
