Pirates Fall in Five Sets to Marquette

Date: October 29, 2017

By: Chris Schweitzer

Seton Hall lost to Marquette by a score of 3-2 to drop to 14-12 on the season and 8-5 in Big East play. The Pirates were coming off a straight set victory over DePaul on Friday night but failed to keep the momentum going as they lost in five sets on Saturday night.

The Pirates failed to get much going early in the first set as Marquette jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. Seton Hall would trail for the rest of the first set but near the end they were able to go on a run and make it interesting. By the end of the set they got the Marquette lead down to only two points but the Golden Eagles would end up winning the set 25-22.

The second set started off much like the first with Marquette jumping out to an early 10-4 lead. Also, similar to the first set Seton Hall trailed much of the set until a late run got them back into it. In this set however they were able to tie it up at 24 after being down 24-20. At this point a team needs to win by two points to win the set and no team could string together success until the Pirates were able to finally win the marathon set by a score of 35-33 after an attack error by Marquette.

The third set started back and forth with no team able to secure a large lead until Marquette took a 15-9 lead. The Pirates would make it interesting as they tied it at 24 behind 4 kills from Abby Thelen, and 3 kills from Sharay Barnes, and Amanda Rachwal each in the third set. Despite their best effort they would drop this third set by a score of 26-24.

Sharay Barnes was able to keep up her strong play from the set before and tallied 5 kills in the fourth set. This set was very back forth all the way through with no side getting a lead bigger than two points at any point in the set. With the Pirates down 23-21 late in the set Dominique Mason came to the rescue as she got three straight kills to win the set for Seton Hall 25-23.

In the fifth and final set the two teams would only play to 15 and Seton Hall came out very slow falling to 6-0 deficit quickly. The Pirates would slowly try to crawl back into the set but the early deficit they put themselves in proved to be too much and they lost the final set 15-11.

Sharay Barnes and Abby Thelen led the Pirates offensively with 21 and 20 kills respectively.

Seton Hall dropped to 14-12 on the season and their conference record falls to 8-5 with a matchup versus Villanova coming up next Friday November 3.
