Pirates fall in 2OT heartbreak to Georgetown, 77-71

The Pirates were unable to hang on in a thrilling 77-71 double-overtime defeat to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday night.

Myles Powell put Seton Hall on the board at the 19:09 mark with a made three-pointer, 3-0. James Akinjo responded 36 seconds later with a mid-range jumper on the left-side and Georgetown trailed 3-2. At the 18:02 mark, Mac McClung sank a second-chance three-pointer to make it a 6-5 game, in which the Pirates were ahead.

Akinjo drilled a three-pointer with 13:47 left in the half, and the three gave Georgetown a 12-8 advantage. Powell knocked down a right-side jump shot that allowed Seton Hall to take a 17-16 lead at the 8:47 mark in the first. Romaro Gill’s put-back slam with 7:13 to go extended The Hall’s lead to 20-16. 1:47 later, Powell added on to the Pirates’ lead with a layup and the Pirates led 22-16.

After Shavar Reynolds intercepted a pass by Josh LeBlanc, Myles Cale scored on a fast-break opportunity with 1:11 remaining. The Pirates were ahead 28-20. The half ended with Seton Hall on top 28-24.

Seton Hall did not score in the final 2:46 of the first-half. Powell led all scoring in the first half with 17 points. From the field, Seton Hall shot 33.3% and Georgetown’s field goal percentage was 30.3%.

The second half started off with a Jessie Govan score underneath the basket, which cut into the deficit to make it a 28-26 contest. 3:13 into the final half, Myles Powell cashed in on a three-point opportunity after he was fouled, and the score was 34-29. At the 14:25 mark, McClung’s two free-throws gave Georgetown a 35-34 edge over Seton Hall.

Georgetown extended their lead to 39-36 with 13:10 left, after Josh LeBlanc hit a jumper from outside the paint. With 11:21 left, Greg Malinowski's layup off of a Taurean Thompson turnover resulted in a 44-39 positive margin for Georgetown.  Georgetown retook a 49-47 lead with 8:15 left, following a Govan layup in the paint.

With 4:47 to go, Quincy McKnight gave the Pirates a 55-51 lead with his layup. Akinjo would tie the game up at 55 with 3:34 remaining when he sank a pair of attempts at the line. Georgetown’s LeBlanc secured a 59-57 lead after a Seton Hall turnover with 1:27 on the clock. Michael Nzei managed to score a layup with 23 seconds left, which sent the game into overtime with a score knotted up at 59.  

Powell’s deep-ball at the 2:15 waypoint in the first overtime put the Pirates within one point, 65-64. Govan was fouled with seven seconds left on the clock and missed his first attempt but sank his second. Georgetown was on top 66-64. Jared Rhoden responded with a last-second layup to keep the Pirates alive and send the game into a second overtime.

Despite the game being tied at the 2:46 mark, Georgetown pulled away in the second overtime after a pair of free-throws by Govan, that extended Georgetown’s lead to 73-71. The Pirates ultimately fell to Georgetown 77-71 in a double overtime nail biter.

Seton Hall falls to 16-12 on the season, and next plays at home against No. 10 Marquette on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
