Pirates Fall to Villanova at Home 1-0

Date: October 5, 2017

The Seton Hall women's soccer team fell to the Villanova Wildcats 1-0 on Thursday night at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Pirates outshot the Wildcats 8-7, but only had one shot on goal. They were able to get some chances going forward toward goal, with their best chance coming in the ninth minute, when Siobhan McGovern was in on net, but the Villanova defense stood tall and stalled out the attack.

The lone goal in the game came in the 13th minute when Amanda Vocelka was able to find the back of the net to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. Vocelka was able to connect on a ball bouncing in the box off of a Mandi Wilson free kick.

The second half saw a lot of back and forth, and Seton Hall's attack fizzled out in the latter half of the game. Not many chances were created by either side.

"It's our Achilles heel," Head Coach Rick Stainton said about the team struggling to create chances. "We can't execute in the goal scoring category."

Coach Stainton wants to see a more aggressive offensive approach moving forward.

"We're trying to create more threatening opportunities, so that we have better chances, but at the end of the day we need to score goals to win games," Coach Stainton said.

The Pirates are back in action on Sunday, October 8 to take on the Creighton Bluejays at Owen T. Carroll Field at 1PM. You can catch all the action on WSOU 89.5 FM.
