Pirates draw DePaul 1-1 in 2OT

Date: October 6, 2018

The Seton Hall men’s soccer team (4-3-2, 1-2-1 in BE) drew with the DePaul Blue Demons (4-6-1, 1-2-1 in BE) 1-1 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago.

The Pirates and the Blue Demons were well matched all throughout the first half until the 42nd minute when junior forward Carlton McKenzie sent a perfect through ball to senior Francisco Alderete where he rocketed a shot into the lower right corner of the net. The goal was Alderete’s first of the year, and placed the Pirates in the lead heading into the half.

The lead would not remain for long, as DePaul midfielder Zach El-Shafei put in a clean rebound off a free kick in the 59th minute, equalizing the score 1-1. Neither teams were able to repeat their attacking opportunities and finished regular time with a score of 1-1.

It was in the 1st overtime period where Andreas Nota’s goalkeeping abilities really showed when DePaul had multiple corner kick opportunities, but Nota prevented all opportunities for the Blue Demons to score. Nota finished the full match with 6 saves, making the same amount of saves for 3 of the last 4 Big East matches.

The score remained tied at the end of the first overtime period. It was in the second overtime period where the Seton Hall offense resurfaced, as both Alex Pozesky and David Arvidsson had shots on goal but where solidly defended by DePaul goal keeper Drew Nuelle. Both teams were unable to find the back of the net and at the end of both overtime periods and the game ended up at a 1-1 draw. Both teams had 16 shots with Seton Hall having 9 of those shots on goal.

The Pirates will be back in action on October 12th, as they host Providence at Owen T. Carroll Field at 6:30 pm.
