Pirates draw CCSU 0-0

Date: September 17, 2018

By Richard Behan

The Pirates offense started strong on Sunday afternoon, outshooting CCSU 9-3 through the first half. However, Central Connecticut State put on the pressure in the second half, eventually outshooting the Pirates 22-19. A combined 41 shots between the two teams led to a larger workload for both goalkeepers. Senior Anna MacLean and Ashley Cavanaugh battled it out in between the two posts, totaling 19 saves. MacLean registered 10 of those saves, which counts as a season-high.

A number of other Pirates shined in this game, including Sophomore standout Cassy Harrigan, Eva Gonzalez, Marissa Aniolowski, and Freshman Lizzy Kirk. Harrigan recorded 5 shots (3 on goal), continuing her role as a consistent offensive threat for the Pirates this season. Harrigan’s 5 shots and 3 on goal were also both season-highs. Eva Gonzalez also had a strong game, compiling 3 shots (1 on goal), all while playing the entire 110 minutes. Aniolowski and Kirk both recorded 1 shot on goal.

The Pirates faced a scare at the end of the game, as CCSU almost scored to give the Pirates yet another late-game setback. However, the header from the forward went off of the crossbar, and the Pirates were able to escape with the tie.

The Pirates now have a 2-3-3 record on the season, with a 1-2-2 record at home and a 1-1-1 record on the road. CCSU now holds a record of 6-1-2, with a 4-0-2 record at home and a 2-1 record on the road.

The Pirates finish non-conference play on the road this Wednesday, September 19, at LIU Brooklyn (2-6-1) at 6pm. Looking ahead, the Pirates open Big East play at Owen T. Carroll Field against DePaul (4-3-2) on Saturday, September 22 at 1 pm.
