Pirates Comeback Comes Up Short Against VCU

The Pirates fell to the VCU Rams 3-2 after battling back from being down two sets to none on Saturday in the VCU Invitational.

The first set remained close, with momentum shifting between the two teams. The Pirates challenged the Rams at the end of the set but VCU won 27-25. Both Abby Thelen and Caitlin Koska each had five kills.

VCU carried their momentum into the second set, taking a 3-0 lead to begin the set. The Pirates momentum shifted after being down 16-13 with a kill from Thelen. However, the Rams were able to shift the momentum back into their favor winning the set 25-20. Thelen tacked on three more kills to her day after the set while Dominique Mason had seven.

With their backs against the wall, Seton Hall turned it around in the third set, going on a 4-0 run to get a 9-6 lead. The Pirates carried their momentum throughout the set, giving them a 15-13 lead. Seton Hall led 22-18 until a 4-0 run from VCU lead to a 22-22 tie with the momentum shifting in VCU's favor. Despite VCU's challenge, the Pirates held on to win the set 25-23.

Seton Hall built upon their third set win jumping out to a 9-3 lead. VCU overcame a seven point Seton Hall lead, making the score to 14-12 in the set. VCU came as close as 17-15 in the fourth set but the Pirates dominated to close it out, winning the set 25-19.

The fifth set saw The Pirates take a quick 3-0 lead over the Rams. As the sides switched in the fifth set, Seton Hall led VCU 8-4. After the switch, VCU gained back their momentum on a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Rams' run continued until the Pirates finally scored to make it 13-9. VCU claimed the victory after going on a 9-0 run to win the set 15-9 and the match.

Abby Thelen finished the game with 17 kills with Dominique Mason finishing with 16 and Sharay Barnes finishing with 15. Sarah Kenneweg had 17 digs for the Hall.

The Hall is now 6-6 on the season. The Pirates kick off Big East Play next week when they travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette on September 22.
