Pirates blanked in 5-0 loss to Marquette

After losing 5-1 to the Villanova Wildcats last Thursday, the Seton Hall Pirates were absolutely shellacked by the Marquette Golden Eagles by a score of 5-nil at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, NJ.

Marquette defeated the Hall last season by a score of 4-0 in the final game of the season, which led to the hiring of new head coach Ciara Crinion. This game would be a great benchmark to see how the staff and the players progressed from last season to now.

Starting lineups were announced for the Pirates and Golden Eagles, and senior goalie Jackie Robinson for the Hall got the start over standout freshman Harpa Johannsdottir, for reasons unknown. This was an interesting move from the coaching staff to say the least, and it was surprising to many in attendance.

This move backfired early on Seton Hall, as Marquette found the back of the net early, with sophomore forward Alyssa Bombacino finishing a goal with an assist from junior Kylie Sprecher after Robinson failed to corral the save. Just like that, the Pirates were behind the eight ball on the scoreboard, and the mountain got even steeper.

Two fouls on Cassandra Harrigan and a couple offsides calls on the Golden Eagles later, Marquette tallied another goal on the scoreboard. Sophomore midfielder Katrina Wetherell intercepted a failed clear attempt from the Seton Hall defense and slotted another goal in, pushing the score to 2-nil in the 20th minute.

Six minutes later, Bombacino racked up another goal with an assist from Wetherell, after this time, a defensive breakdown from the Pirates. This made the score 3-0 in the first half, and Robinson was severely outmatched, with the Pirates back line giving her almost no help against the Marquette attack.

Both teams made a few substitutions before Robinson made a good save against sophomore forward Macey Shock, and the Hall entered halftime facing a three-goal deficit, a nearly impossible hole to climb out of.

The Pirates weren’t doing too bad in terms of allowing shots, but the Golden Eagles were astonishingly efficient, finding the back of the net on half of their attempts in the first half. Needless to say, Coach Crinion and her team had a lot to correct at halftime.

The Pirates came out of the break with a sense of urgency somewhat, but Marquette was a wrecking ball on the field. Bombacino banged in her third and final goal of the day, giving her a hat trick on the afternoon. Seton Hall replaced Robinson in goal with freshman goalie Blair Currie, raising even more questions about Johannsdottir’s condition. Nevertheless, the Golden Eagles weren’t exactly a welcoming committee.

Throughout the day, the Hall were making solid runs across the field, but the Marquette defense was a brick wall. Senior goalie Maddy Henry came into this game with the most saves in the Big East, and it showed today as every time the Pirates tested her, she showed why she’s one of the best.

Late in the game, the Golden Eagles made one late push as redshirt junior forward Abby Hess finished their fifth goal of the day in the 89th minute. The final whistle sounded as the Pirates defense allowed five goals for the third straight game, leaving them searching for answers.

Seton Hall travels to Chicago, Illinois to take on the DePaul Blue Demons on the road, as they look to snap a seven-game losing streak. Let’s see if they can get it done.
