Late Seton Hall Rally Comes up Short, Falls at Creighton in Overtime

Date: January 28, 2018

The Seton Hall Pirates tested their three-game winning streak on Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, NE and fell to the Creighton Blue Jays 81-64 in overtime.

The Pirates (13-9, 5-6 BIG EAST) came into this matchup as winners in four of its last five contests, and were looking to break their .500 mark in conference play. The Pirates had three scorers in double figures on Sunday, led by JaQuan Jackson’s 21 points and five made three-pointers. Shadeen Samuels added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Inya Butina recorded a double-double with 16 points and ten assists, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

It was a rollercoaster of a first half for Seton Hall, as there was a huge disparity between the first two quarters. The Pirates scored just four points in the first quarter, and trailed Creighton 24-4 after the first ten minutes of the game. At one point in the first quarter, the Pirates were scoreless for over seven minutes of play, and Seton Hall recorded more turnovers (6) than field goals made (2).

A switch was flipped in the second quarter, however, and the Pirates climbed right back into it heading into halftime. The Pirates poured in 30 points in the second quarter, while only allowing 11 points to the Blue Jays. Jackson put up 13 points to go with three triples in the quarter, and Seton Hall went on a 14-0 run to take its first lead of the game late in the second quarter. A three-pointer from Nicole Jimenez with under ten seconds left in the quarter cut the Creighton lead to just one point, 35-34, to close out the first half.

The second half continued to be a back-and-forth affair for both teams. Late in the fourth quarter, a floater by Butina cut the Creighton lead to 64-60 with 1:20 left in regulation. Two free throws by Jackson cut the deficit to 64-62 with 40 seconds remaining, and then Samuels converted a layup to tie the game with 18.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, the Pirates did not stand a chance as the squad failed to record a point in overtime, while Creighton showed signs of their early first-quarter run. The Blue Jays outscored Seton Hall 17-0 in overtime to solidify the victory.

The Pirates will have the next several days off before returning home to historic Walsh Gymnasium to take on Xavier on Friday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
