Date: May 17, 2019

By: Dalton Allison

Following a 3-0 loss to St. John’s on Thrusday, the Seton Hall Pirates will look to even up the series with St. John’s on Friday.

The loss came despite a strong performance on the mound by Ricky Devito. Devito went a strong five innings before allowing two runs to cross the plate. This was a double by Ryan Markey that happened with one out, and it plated two runs to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead. St. John’s would tack on another run to make the score, the final 3-0.

As for offense on the day, it was mostly Tyler Shedler-McAvoy providing offense for Seton Hall. The only Pirate with more than one hit, he laced two singles for his share of offensive production. No Pirate was able to register an extra-base hit against Joe LaSorsa. LaSorsa was stellar for the Johnnies, providing eight innings of shutout ball along with three strikeouts. He improved his record to 5-5 on the season.

Looking at Friday’s matchup, the Pirates will be tasked with facing Jeff Belge, a lefty who has a 4-5 record to go along with a 4.37 ERA. The Pirates will be sending out Noah Thompson, who is 4-2 on the season with a 4.47 ERA.

With St. John’s already up 1-0 in the series, it is going to be pivotal for Seton Hall to take the middle game of the series. The Johnnies are still trying to break into the Big East tournament, so they are playing with an especially heavy chip on their shoulder. Seton Hall, while already in the tournament, is playing to get into a higher seed while out in Mason, Ohio. The highest seed that the Pirates could receive is the No. 3 seed.

Pregame coverage will begin in studio at 1:45 with Wilnir Louis and Michael Daly. At 2 pm, Dalton Allison and Chris Russo will be on the call for the game from Queens.
