Game Preview: Seton Hall travels to take on Howard and No. 21 Golden Eagles at Marquette (1/12/19)

Date: January 11, 2019

Seton Hall (12-4 overall, 3-1 Conf.) will play one of their toughest conference games so far this season when they enter in Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee to face No. 21 Marquette Golden Eagles (13-3 Overall, 2-1 Conf.)

The Pirates were able to bounce back from a 75-74 loss at DePaul to defeat the Butler Bulldogs 76-75 in their last time out on the hardwood. The Pirates did not get off to a hot start early on in that match, and they were in a 14-9 ditch early on. However, with the help of their physical and dominant defense that the Pirates had throughout a majority of the game, the Pirates were able to go into half time with a 34-25 lead. The start of the second half was not pretty either for the Pirates; after a fast break bucket by Quincy McKnight, the Pirates went on a four-minute scoring drought. Seton Hall found their nine-point lead shrink to a three-point lead entering the U16 media timeout in the second half. After the break, the Pirates found themselves offensively and were able to get back to a double-digit lead, which they needed towards the end of the game.

At the end of the game, free throws became the deciding factor to who would come out of this game victorious. The Pirates went 9/10 of their last free throws, as well as executing a greatly designed play at the end of the game which was all that they needed. A buzzer beater by Kamar Baldwin went in but it was not enough, and the Pirates won by one. Myles Powell led all scorers with 31 points, and the Pirates defense held Butler to 38.8% shooting from the floor and 25% shooting from behind the arc.

As for the Golden Eagles, they are coming off a thriller against the Creighton Bluejays, a game in which they won 106-104 in overtime. Marquette never led throughout regulation in their game versus the Creighton, and the Golden Eagles almost left Omaha with a loss. However, with 0.8 seconds on the clock in regulation, the Bluejays were up 85-82 with the pass inbounds pending. Creighton’s inbound pass went out of bounds and gave Marquette a new lease of life. They took advantage of their opportunity, and Sam Hauser’s three-pointer tied the game and forced overtime.

Markus Howard took full advantage of the overtime period, and in the extra time, he scored 14 points and sealed their victory. On the night, Howard scored 53 points on 15-26 shooting. He also shot 10-14 from three-point range and 13-15 from the charity stripe.
