Game preview: Seton Hall starts weekend road trip at Providence on Friday morning

Date: February 13, 2020

By: Madi Travisano

The Seton Hall Pirates will face off against Providence Friars this Friday as they take the trip to Rhode Island.

So far in conference play the Hall is 8-5 floating in the middle of the Big East Women’s Standings, while the Friars are at the bottom with a record of 1-11.

The Pirates recently took on No.14 DePaul and lost 86-76. Yet not for nothing the Hall held their own and showed the versatility of their bench. Freshman Mya Jackson had a team high 19 points coming off the bench, with senior standout Shadeen Samuels following with 18 points. The Pirates were able to show how they can keep up with powerhouses like the Blue Demons by controlling the game and staying within just a few points until the last few minutes of the game.

The Friars’ last outing was a home matchup against Creighton. They fell 77-68 as four different players reached double figures in scoring. Providence was led by sophomore Mary Baskerville with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Then following behind her was fellow sophomores Earlette Scott who had 16 points and Alyssa Geary with 12 points. Now, let’s take a look at the last time the Pirates and the Friars met this season.

The Hall beat the Friars 97-55 with Samuels and fellow senior Alexis Lewis both reaching the 20-point mark. Not only did the Pirates dominate offensively, but defensively they maintained that same power. The Hall outrebounded them while also forcing 23 turnovers that turned in to 28 points from those turnovers. For the Friars, once again Mary Baskerville led them with 14 points. She is definitely the one the Hall is going to need to figure out stopping again in this matchup.

The Pirates hope to start a new winning streak as they travel to Alumni Hall with their first of three upcoming road games. Tip-off will be at 11:30 a.m. so make sure to tune in to 89.FM WSOU as Michael Daly and Mat Mlodzinski will be on the call.
