Game preview: Seton Hall plays St. Joseph's at Fordham

Date: November 16, 2019

By: Madi Travisano

The Seton Hall Pirates will take a short trip to the Bronx this Sunday, November 17, as they take on the Saint Joseph’s Hawks. The game will be played at Rose Hill Gym on Fordham University’s campus and tip-off will be at 2:30.

While we need to go back to go forward, the Pirates recorded their first loss of the season this past Friday night as Princeton narrowly won 78-76. Senior Alexis Lewis led the Pirates with 27 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals.

Senior Barbara Johnson and Junior Desiree Elmore both had 20-point games to once again show the Pirate’s versatility on offense. Another veteran who shined on the other side of the ball was junior Selena Philoxy as she had a team-best 11 rebounds for the second straight game. These veterans will have to once again step up for the Pirates as they take on a 2-0 Saint Josephs.

The Hall leads 8-5 all-time against the Hawks but lost the last meeting in the WNIT in 2018. The Hawks were predicted to finish 10th overall in their conference, the Atlantic 10. Saint Joseph’s has a lot of young talent with new freshmen and many returning sophomores. Sophomore guard Katie Jekot will be the one to stop as she is the leading scorer from last year’s team leading with three-pointers at 42 and steals at 36.

The freshmen duo to look out for are Claire Melia and Gabby Smalls. Melia had a 23-point game in their season-opener and her collegiate debut against Columbia. Where Smalls came off the bench to have nine rebounds in 16 minutes. On both sides of the ball, this rookie duo lead the Hawks. Those aren’t the only freshmen standouts as three other freshmen make up their roster of 13 this season.

The Hawks also have some veterans that will be leading this team in junior guard Mary Sheehan. Last season she appeared in 30 games, averaging 18.4 minutes with a 32.1 shooting percentage from the three-point range. Michael Daly and Ronny Castaneda will be on the call, be sure to tune in to 89.5 FM WSOU for afternoon tipoff time at 2:30 from the Bronx.
