Game Preview: Seton Hall hosts Hoyas for mid-week clash (2/13/19)

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team entered Saturday night’s contest against Creighton with a 13-9 overall record and 4-6 conference record. The Pirates picked up a much needed 63-58 victory over the Bluejays to advance their placement in the Big East standings.   

The first half of the Creighton game was very competitive, as the Pirates lead 31-29 through the first 20 minutes of play. The Hall’s leading scorer in the first-half was Myles Powell, who had nine points. Creighton’s top scorer in the first-half was Martin Krampelj with 14 points during his 15 minutes on the floor. Seton Hall shot 34.4% from the field and connected on 4/14 attempted three-point shots in the opening half.

The Pirates saw a 12-0 run to begin the second half against Creighton fall apart, as the Bluejays surged back with a 22-5 run of their own. The Pirates would hang on to win the game 63-58 against Creighton. The Pirates managed to shoot 32.1% in the second and drained 3/11 attempted threes from distance.

Heading into Wednesday night’s clash against Georgetown, Powell is averaging 21.7 points-per-game, which ranks second in the Big East behind Marquette’s Markus Howard. The only other Pirate in double-digit scoring for the season is Quincy McKnight with 10.3 points-per-game.

The Pirates rank seventh in the conference in points-per-game with an average of 73.1 points-per-game. The Georgetown Hoyas average 81.5 points-per-game, ranking first in the Big East. Similarly, the Hoyas are the conference leader in rebounds, by capturing an average of 40.4 rebounds-per-game. Seton Hall’s 34.4 boards-per-game puts them in the seventh spot amongst their conference peers. The Hall and Georgetown are in a five-way tie for the third spot in the Big East standings. The Pirates are 14-9 on the season and 5-6 in the Big East. Georgetown has a 15-9 overall record and have a 5-6 conference record.

Georgetown is hoping to avoid a two-game skid when they take on the Pirates on Wednesday night. They last played on Saturday, when they fell to Butler 73-69 in Capital One Arena.

The Bulldogs were on top of the Hoyas 41-35 entering the final 20 minutes of action. Mac McClung led the way for Georgetown with 14 points in the first-half. Butler’s Jordan Tucker scored 14 points and was the only Bulldog in double-digit scoring figures.

Georgetown outscored Butler 34-32 in the second-half and shot a field goal percentage of 36.7%. From downtown, the Hoyas sank 3/10 shots and held Butler to 4/11 from distance, on defense. Georgetown did not make a single field goal attempt in the last 4:25 of the game and missed their last five field goal attempts. Despite the loss to Butler, Mcclung led all scoring with 21 points, and Jamorko Pickett and Jessie Govan combined for 30 points.

On the season, Georgetown’s leading scorer, Govan, is fifth in the Big East in scoring with 18.0 points-per-game. McClung is second on the team scoring, averaging 13.6 points-per-game. Fellow freshman guard, James Akinjo, rounds out the double-digit scoring for Georgetown this season, with 13.4 points-per-game.
