Game preview: Seton Hall challenges Marquette in hopes of extending win streak to six games

Date: January 9, 2020

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team (11-4, 3-0 conference) will be returning home to the Prudential Center this Saturday, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m. to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles (11-4, 1-2 conference).

The Pirates are coming off their fifth straight win where they beat Xavier 83-71 in the Cintas Center. This win streak includes the beginning of their conference schedule where they also beat the likes of DePaul and Georgetown. In the game against the Musketeers, Seton Hall saw major contribution on the offensive end from Quincy McKnight who had 15 points and eight assists. On the defensive end of the court Romaro Gill and Ike Obiagu were hard at work stopping shots from falling, combining for eight blocks.

This game against Marquette however will prove to be a tougher challenge as the Pirates enter what will be their seventh straight game without junior forward Sandro Mamukelashvili, who has been out since early December with a fracture in his right wrist. They will also have to face Marquette’s senior guard Markus Howard, who has two Big East player of the week awards this season and is currently averaging 26.8 points per game.

Marquette will be come into this game with a conference record of 1-2 after losing to both Providence and Creighton but beating the then 10th ranked Villanova in the new year. This was somewhat of an upset as Marquette managed to hold Villanova to only 60 points.

During the nonconference portion of their schedule, Marquette lost a tough game against Maryland in which the Terrapins were able to hold Howard to just six points on 1-12 shooting from the field. This is something that the Pirates will need to do to in order to stifle the Golden Eagles’ offense.

These two teams met three times last season. The regular season match up was split with the Hall winning in Prudential but losing on the road in Milwaukee. When it came down to it though the Pirates beat the Golden Eagles in the semifinals of the Big East tournament.

This game will be broadcasted live on WSOU with coverage starting at 3:30 p.m. Wilnir Louis and Joe Cammarota will be on the call for this game, while Ronny Castaneda and Christian Gardner will keep you updated from our South Orange, N.J. studios.
