Game Preview: Pirates welcome Blue Demons to Walsh with sweep in mind (2/15/19)

The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (14-10 Overall, 6-7 Big East) looks for a season sweep of the DePaul Blue Demons (17-7 Overall, 8-4 Big East) on Friday night in Walsh Gymnasium.

The Pirates are coming off of a difficult road trip this past weekend, where the team fell to Providence and Creighton. In the loss to Creighton, Seton Hall was ahead of the Bluejays going into the second half, as they led 31-26. Desiree Elmore was the only Pirate to score double-digits in the first-half, she registered 13 points in 12 minutes on the court.

Seton Hall shot 39.3% from the field and sank four of eight attempted three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. Audrey Faber scored 11 points and played all 20 minutes of the first half for Creighton. Faber was the lone Bluejay with double-digit scoring figures in the first half.

The Bluejays managed to outscore the Pirates 54-40 in the second half and went on to defeat the Pirates 80-71. Creighton’s top scorer was Faber with 26 points, and she added five rebounds and two assists. Jaylyn Agnew and Jade Owens had a double-double, respectively. Agnew scored 18 points and captured 14 rebounds. Owens recorded 12 points and secured 10 boards.

Inja Butina was the leading scorer for the Pirates with 16 points. Elmore finished the game with 15 points and six rebounds. The Pirates were outrebounded by Creighton 45-31 and were held to 41.3% from the field. Seton Hall had 19 attempts at the free-throw line and made 11 free-throws.

Shadeen Samuels is the season leader in points-per-game, as she averages 18.6 per game. Nicole Jimenez is second on the team in scoring with 12.8 points-per-game, and Butina is third by scoring 12.2 per game.

The DePaul Blue Demons were victorious in their last game on Sunday against Georgetown. The Blue Demons outlasted the Hoyas 76-71 in McGrath-Phillips Arena. Chante Stonewall led the charge for DePaul with 20 points and four rebounds. Second in scoring for DePaul was Mart’E Grays, who registered 18 points in 24 minutes of play. DePaul shot 47.3% from the field and went 32% from beyond the arc.

The last time Seton Hall and DePaul met, the Pirates stunned the Blue Demons 84-73 in Chicago. Seton Hall had five players in double-figures, and Samuels was tied for a game-high of 18 points. The Hall outrebounded DePaul 45-41 and shot 76% at the free-throw line, compared to DePaul’s 73% at the line.

89.5 FM WSOU will have the entire coverage of Friday night’s contest starting at 6:45 p.m. The pregame show will be hosted by Frank Frasco and Chris Russo. Matt Ambrose and Dalton Allison will be calling the game from Walsh Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
