Game Preview: Pirates set to face Hoyas in Big East Tournament (3/14/19)

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team will face off with Georgetown for the third time this season, in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big East Tournament at 9:30 p.m. from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

 

The Pirates enter the Big East Tournament as the third seed after finishing conference play with a record of 9-9. The Hoyas enter the contest as the sixth seed after also finishing with a record of 9-9 in Big East play. This will be the third time this season that the Pirates and Hoyas will match up. In the first meeting, the Pirates came away with a 90-75 victory on February 13. It was none other than Myles Powell who led the way for Seton Hall with 30 points. Three other Pirates’ reached double figures with Michael Nzei adding 18 points and nine rebounds. Jessie Govan led the way for Georgetown with 20 points and six boards.

 

In the second meeting, Georgetown was able to pull out a 77-71 double-overtime victory. Govan stepped up in the overtime periods to finish with 21 points and 12 rebounds. James Akinjo, the Big East Freshman of the Year, added 16 points and a team-high four assists in the victory. It was Powell once again leading Seton Hall with 35 points. Sandro Mamukelashvili secured a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

 

The quarterfinal matchup between the Pirates and Hoyas will highlight some of the top talent in the Big East. To start it will feature two members of the All-Big East First Team in Powell and Govan. Powell was second in the league in scoring average with 22.6 points per game and third in three-point field goals made with 3.00 per game. Govan enters the contest sixth in the league in scoring average with 17.6 points per game, and tied for fourth in rebounds per game with 7.6 per game.

 

The third meeting between the two will also feature one of the top veterans as well as one of the top youngsters in the conference. The Hoyas have Akinjo, the Big East Freshman of the Year, who led the league in assists per game with 5.3 per game. Seton Hall has Michael Nzei, the Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and fifth-year senior, that currently sits fifth in the league in field goal percentage, shooting it at a .619 percent clip.

 

89.5 FM WSOU will have full coverage of the quarterfinal matchup. Jose Feliciano and Chris Russo will bring you pregame coverage starting 15 minutes before tip-off, and will also handle Hall Line postgame. It will be Matt Ambrose and Frank Frasco bringing you the live coverage of the game from inside Madison Square Garden.
