Game Preview: Pirates face Cardinals in high noon clash(12/1/18)

Date: November 30, 2018

By Michael Daly

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team (4-2 overall) hosts former Big East foe, Louisville (4-2 overall) at noon on Saturday in the Prudential Center.

Saturday’s rematch between these two schools comes nearly a year to the day when Seton Hall pulled off a 79-77 upset at Louisville. Junior guard Myles Powell scored 13 points and shot 33 percent from the floor against the Cardinals on December 3, 2017. Last year’s Pirate squad shot 45.6% as a team against Louisville in the winning effort. This time around, The Hall will be squaring off against a familiar face in head coach Chris Mack, who coached the Xavier Musketeers from 2009-2018.

In his first year at Louisville, Mack’s Cardinals are out to a 4-2 start and are coming off of a thrilling overtime victory over #9 Michigan State on Tuesday night. In the 82-78 win, sophomore forward Jordan Nwora had a quality offensive effort with 14 points and nine rebounds. During the overtime period, redshirt junior guard Ryan McMahon scored all seven of his team’s post-regulation points. McMahon scored a game-high 24 points. He knocked down four shots from behind the three point line and sank 12 of his 13 free throw attempts. The Cardinals finished Tuesday’s home victory shooting 39.6% from the field and 73% from the charity stripe.

The Pirate’s momentum is at an all-time high following their Wooden Legacy Championship, where they routed Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and Miami. The latter was Seton Hall’s toughest test to date so far this season as they defeated Miami in the championship game of the Wooden Legacy tournament. Myles Powell had an impressive performance in the final game with 17 points and three boards. Seton Hall’s unsung senior hero, Michael Nzei, had a career game with a contest high of 21 points. Nzei’s scoring productivity aided his Seton Hall squad in securing a narrow 83-81 victory over the Hurricanes.

Saturday’s game between Seton Hall and Louisville at the Prudential Center is slated for a 12:00 P.M. tip. Tune in to 89.5 WSOU and iHeart Radio at 11:45 A.M. for the pregame show hosted by Matt Ambrose and Dalton Allison, airing live from Barcade in Newark.
