Game Preview: Men's basketball welcomes New Haven for exhibition

Date: November 8, 2018

By Wilnir Louis

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team will welcome the New Haven Chargers into Walsh Gymnasium for a final season tune-up exhibition. The Pirates (1-0 overall) will look to build upon their 89-49 victory against the Wagner Seahawks on Tuesday.

In that last game, Myles Powell led the Hall to their eighth straight season opener victory. He only took 13 shots, but made 10 and went a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe to score 30 points. That would lead all game scorers and tie his career high in points. Michael Nzei would be the only other Pirate to score double digits with 11 points on 5-6 shooting.

Besides the top two scorers for Seton Hall, it was a well-rounded scoring output for the Pirates, as 11 out of the 12 Pirates who played scored at least one point. As a team, they shot 51.7% on the floor and 76% from the free throw line.

As for the Chargers, they are a division two team from the Northeast-10 Conference who finished 17-10 overall and had a 13-7 conference record. They ended their season last year with a 75-59 loss in the Northeast-10 tournament loss to Merrimack.

Head coach Ted Hotaling will enter his ninth season for the Chargers looking for someone to replace First-Team All-Conference player Danny Upchurch. Some of the key returnees for the Chargers is Elijah Bailey, a 6’3 guard from Freeport, New York and Najee Larcher, a 6’7 forward from the Bronx. Bailey started all but one game for the Chargers, and was second on the team last year in points per game (12.3), as well as second on the team with 45 three pointers. Larcher, on the other hand, shot a team-best 65.2% from the field and led the Blue and Yellow with 20 total blocks. Another player to watch will be Derrick Rowland, who was on the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team after finishing the season third on the team in points per game (9.6)

This should be a good matchup for the Pirates. Tip-off will be at 3pm and coverage will be found on 89.5FM WSOU, with Frank Frasco and Michael Daly on the call.
