Date: January 18, 2019

By Wilnir Louis

Seton Hall men’s basketball (12-6 Overall, 3-3 Conf.) will play in the friendly confines of the Prudential Center for their rematch against the DePaul Blue Demons (10-6 Overall, 2-3 Conf.).

In the last matchup between these two teams on Jan. 9, Seton Hall got the short end of the stick and lost in that game 75-74 at Wintrust Arena. The Hall and the Blue Demons were trading baskets in the first half of their last matchup until a scoring drought by the Pirates turned into a huge run for DePaul. After attempting to claw their way back, the Hall found themselves in a 38-33 deficit after the first half. The start of the second half was not that great for Seton Hall either, as they found themselves down by double digits with 14 minutes left in the match. The Pirates were fighting and were able to bring it to a one-possession game, but a missed game-winner by Sandro Mamukelashvili prevented the Pirates from being victories.

Since then, the Pirates have been struggling. They were able to bounce back from the DePaul loss and defeat Butler 76-75. After that, they lost their next two games, which were road games against then No. 21 Marquette and Providence. Marquette was able to defeat Seton Hall 70-66, while Providence trounced the Pirates in the second half and defeated the Hall 72-63 in the Pirates last time out on the court. Myles Powell still has been leading the charge for the Hall. In those last three games after the loss to DePaul, Powell has averaged 21.3 points on 40.8% shooting.

Meanwhile for DePaul, since the win against Seton Hall, they have gone 1-1. They were able to ride the momentum from the game against the Hall into Carnesecca Arena and defeat St. John’s 79-71. When they returned to Wintrust Arena on Jan. 16, the Butler Bulldogs clobbered them, 87-69. Femi Olujobi was the leading scorer in both games, as he went for 27 points in their matchup against the Red Storm then had 23 points in their loss against the Bulldogs.

Seton Hall will try to push their home winning streak to six games, while also redeeming their loss earlier this season against a hungry Blue Demons team. Find out if the Pirates will be able to complete the task on 89.5 FM WSOU when Bob Towey and Mat Mlodzinski bring you all of the coverage of the matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:45.
