Game Preview (11/14/18): Hall travels to Nebraska for early test

Date: November 13, 2018

By Wilnir Louis

The Seton Hall Pirates men’s basketball team (1-0 overall) will face their first regular season road test as they take a trip to Pinnacle Bank Arena to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0 overall).

In the Pirates’ lone regular season game, it was the Myles Powell show. Against Wagner, Powell seemed like he is ready for the season ahead, tying his career high with 30 points on 10-13 shooting. The rest of the scoring was a balanced attack, as Michael Nzei was the only other player in double digits with 11 points on 5-6 shooting, and six other Pirates scored over five points. Defensively, they had eight blocks and 11 steals and held Wagner to a 32.1% shooting on the night. They also forced the Seahawks to give the ball up 16 times.

In addition to the Pirates regular season game, in their warmup exhibition game against New Haven on Nov. 9, the other Myles, Myles Cale had the spotlight. He led all scorers with 20 points on 7-10 shooting. Similar to the Wagner game, the team’s defense was phenomenal, as they had nine blocks and two steals, forcing New Haven to turn the ball over 12 times, as well as holding them to a 37.9% shooting day.

The Pirates will need to have a great performance on both sides of the ball, as the Cornhuskers are having an exceptionally well start to their regular season. In their first two games of their three game homestead, they are averaging 96.5 points per game while holding their opponents to only 36 points. The two opponents that they faced were Mississippi Valley State and Southeastern Louisiana, whom they beat 106-37 and 87-35 respectively.

It is hard to pinpoint one threat on the Nebraska Cornhuskers team, because every player is finding a way to score. In their first game against Mississippi Valley, Nebraska had three starters in double figures (Isaac Copeland Jr., James Palmer Jr., and Glynn Watson Jr.) while Nana Akenten had 18 points off the bench. In their game against Southeastern Louisiana, all five starters saw a double-digit point total, while Brady Heiman had 10 points off the bench.

This will be a great matchup for the Hall, and will be a huge team test early in their tough non-conference schedule. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm with Dagen Hughes and Chris Famularo on the call, and pregame coverage starting at 7:15 on 89.5 FM WSOU, and on the iHeart Radio app.
