Every Time I Die: From Parts Unknown Album Review

Date: June 19, 2014

By Rohit Ravi

"Blow your [expletive] brains out." Every Time I Die sets the tone from the first song on their seventh full length effort From Parts Unknown as vocalist and founding member Keith Buckley explains in an interview with Loudwire Magazine "It got to a point where being angry was boring... Now I like things again, having more fun again."

Even before I heard any of the album I was excited when Converge guitarist and Epitaph labelmate, Kurt Ballou, was penned as the producer of this record. Ballou produced three albums ("Meir" by Kvelertak, "Abandon All Life" by Nails and "Serpents Unleashed" by Skeletonwitch) that ended up in my top ten of 2013, so a marriage between Ballou and the Converge-idolizing Every Time I Die is a match made in hardcore heaven.

You can hear the franticness of Every Time I Die right from the beginning with the explosive song "The Great Secret" and it does not let go from there. The album is packed with many quick hitters, with 12 songs spanning less than 40 minutes and the only slow moment is the unsettling piano intro on the halfway point of the album "Moor." Another standout from the album is how mature Buckley has gotten as a singer, especially on the tracks "El Dorado" and "Decayin' With The Boys", the vocalist really shows his range.

After only a two year turnaround from their last album Ex Lives, you could not expect a better release from the Buffalo outfit. From the great production and the superb instrumentation to the in-your-face vocals by Keith Buckley, this album will probably find a nice place in my top albums of the year.

From Parts Unknown comes out on July 1st on Epitaph Records, be sure to check it out!

Overall score : 4.5/5
