The Seton Hall women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Loyola Maryland in their season opener on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland. Loyola Maryland won the game off of a golden goal scored in the 96th minute by sophomore forward Sarah Bayer.

Bayer’s game-winning goal was her first goal of the season, and it was assisted by Ariel Tillman and Hannah Hoefs. The Greyhounds trailed Seton Hall 1-0, following Cassy Harrington’s left cross that sailed into the goal for the Pirates in the 28th minute.

Harrington’s goal was the second shot attempt for the Pirates, as the first scoring attempt was manufactured by freshman Jai Smith in the 10th minute, but it veered off to the right of the net.

Six minutes after her first score, Harrington attempted another shot on goal but it was saved by Loyola’s goalie Lily Andres. Loyola responded to The Hall in the 38th minute with a free kick opportunity from 22 yards out by Hoefs that swished in the top left corner of the goal.

Loyola Maryland’s offense tried to break the tie during the 44th minute, when Mary Corcoran’s shot was thwarted by Seton Hall’s goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir. At the end of the first half, the score was knotted up at 1-1.

Less than two minutes after the whistle blew to start the second half, Bayer tried to net her first goal of the game, but her shot attempt was blocked by the Pirates defense. Johannsdottir made another huge save for Seton Hall in the 58th minute that stopped a scoring attempt from Tillman.

Junior midfielder Laura Hooper’s shot attempt in the 59th minute was blocked by Loyola Maryland’s goalkeeper Andres. In the 62nd minute, Hoefs created a shot opportunity for herself but she lofted the shot too high and it landed beyond the goal and out of bounds.

Tillman pushed the pace for the Greyhounds’ offense in the 73rd minute by testing Johannsdottir’s skill set but the freshman goalie came up with another save for Seton Hall. The Pirates’ junior forward, Atley Fortney, kicked her shot on goal wide right of the goalpost in the 73rd minute.

By the end of the 90th minute, neither team could distance themselves from one another, therefore extra-time occurred. In the 95th minute, Loyola Maryland’s offense broke away from Seton Hall’s defense and Bayer racked the game winning goal in overtime.

The Greyhounds defeated Seton Hall 2-1. The Pirates begin their season with a 0-1 overall record, while Loyola captures a victory in their season opener at home over the Pirates.

The Seton Hall Pirates have lost their last four season openers in a row, dating back to the start of the 2016 season. Seton Hall’s rookie head coach Ciara Crinion starts her tenure off with a loss, as she hopes to get her team back on track for their tilt on Thursday night at 6 p.m. against Lafayette at the Red Bulls Training Facility in Whippany, New Jersey.
