In a match that came down to the final whistle, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team (1-12-1 Overall, 0-7-0 Conf.) lost to a hungry Creighton Bluejays team (8-6-2 Overall, 2-3-2 Conf.) Thursday night, to a score of 1-0.

Seton Hall came into this game on a massive losing streak, losing their last four matches by a score of 19-1, meanwhile for the Bluejays, there were looking to jumpstart their climb into the Big East Tournament. The match began as even as it could be in the initial moments of the game with the first shot of the game coming in the seventh minute for Seton Hall after an attempt by Marissa Aniolowski went wide left.

That would be the only shot for Seton Hall for 30 minutes as Creighton was able to attempt four shots of their own between the 17th minute and the 22nd minute. Luckily for Seton Hall, two of those shots were saved by the goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir and none of them were able to go into the goal. By the end of the first half, neither the Pirates nor the Bluejays found the back of the goal, at intermission, the score remained 0-0. At the half, Seton Hall had three shots and three saves, while Creighton had six shots and one save in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Seton Hall went with more of a defensive look to prevent the pressure of the Bluejays from working. The second half started the same way the first half did for these two teams; a defensive battle. The first shot of the half was not taken until the 52nd minute, when a shot by Skylar Heinrich hit the top crossbar.

Creighton did not let the miss shot faze them, and after five more shot attempts, the Bluejays caught a break as the shot attempt by Keelie Fothergill bounced off the Hall and went out of bounds, award Creighton with a corner. In the 75th minute, Ansley Atkinson kicked the ball from the left corner and Jaylin Bosak came running in and made a diving header to get the lone goal of the game. Seton Hall was within striking distance for the whole 90 minutes, but they couldn’t capitalize offensively.

In the second half, the Pirates were outshot by the Bluejays 9-0. Head Coach Ciara Crinion was still happy about her team’s success, understanding that the stakes were a little different for both teams. “We frustrated them in the first 45 minutes and knowing what they’re chasing a playoff game that they were going to play more aggressive and for us we had to continue to defend hard, stay in the game, and give us a chance at the end.”

This was the first game for the Pirates that they have not given up multiple goals since they were on the road at St. John’s on Oct. 3 for their second Big East game of the season. With two more games left in the season for Seton Hall, coach Crinion wants to see more performances like this out of her team.

“I felt like in our recent game we weren’t happy with the way we played but I think tonight you can see that we had a very good team performance.”

Seton Hall Women’s soccer will be on the road for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday at the nation’s capital before they head back home for their final game of the season on Halloween against Providence at 6 p.m.
