The festival’s title was inspired by the song “5 Minutes Alone” by Pantera. In northern New Jersey and New York City, WSOU can be heard on 89.5 FM. The station can also be streamed via wsou.net and the iHeartRadio and RadioFX apps.

“Everyone is missing the opportunity to hear bands live and we wanted to put together something special to fill that void,” said WSOU Music Director Nick Polis. “Working with bands and record labels, we’ve crafted an on-air music festival that represents our station’s unique blend of music – metal, punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, classic metal, and more. Only on WSOU can you experience a festival with bands that represent so many genres of loud and hard rock. Five Months Alone is the ultimate fantasy metal festival.”

In addition to featuring well-known bands such as Slayer, Anthrax, Avenged Sevenfold, Baroness, and Megadeth, WSOU’s Five Months Alone Festival will also include live recordings that spotlight up and coming bands, like New Jersey-based Born A New and upstate New York’s Downswing.

The Five Months Alone Festival kicks off on June 18 at 8:15 a.m. with a 2014 set by Crowbar recorded at Franklin Music Hall (formerly the Electric Factory). The festival closes out on June 21 at 6:00 p.m. with the broadcast of “The Big Four - Live From Sofia, Bulgaria” album, featuring four of the biggest metal bands ever in one continuous performance by Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Following each night, there will also be an “afterparty” at midnight, featuring even more live sets from artists like Windhand, Gorilla Biscuits, and Revocation.  WSOU listeners will also get a bonus treat on Thursday night at 11:45 p.m. when the station will be first terrestrial radio station to play Lamb of God’s new self-titled album.  The complete festival line up can be found at www.wsou.net and on the station’s social media platforms.

“The pandemic has disrupted the lives of the students involved at WSOU, but I have been inspired by how the student staff has responded to remote operation and finding creative ways to be a companion to our listeners during a time when the audience needs their favorite radio station to be a true friend,” said Mark Maben, the station’s General Manager. “To put in the effort to collect so many different live performances, including some recordings never released before publicly, is impressive for a college radio station.  As a veteran broadcaster, what students are doing at WSOU and other college stations is confirmation that when we tap the spirit of young people, radio’s programming always gets stronger.”
