Seton Hall Women's Basketball vs. Philadelphia 11-05-2016 Recap

Date: November 6, 2016

Basketball returned to The Hall this afternoon as the Seton Hall women's team took down Philadelphia University 80-54 in an exhibition match.

Jaquan Jackson led the way for the Pirates, exploding onto the scene in the first half with 25 points before cooling off to finish with 31 points on the day. The question of who will emerge on this Pirates team may have been answered by the junior Jackson, who had to redshirt last year after transferring from Louisiana Tech.

"It felt really good. I knew it was capable of doing it, it was just a matter of putting the ball in the basket, shooting when I was open, driving when I can, and most importantly picking up on defense in the 1-3-1", said Jackson.

The Pirates announced before the season that two underclassman in sophomore LaTecia Smith and redshirt freshman Kaity Healy would serve as captain, but after the performance against Philadelphia, Jackson made clear she still plays an important leadership role for this team.

"Just because I'm not assigned as a captain, I still hold everyone accountable. I'm a big leader on this team, and I am older. So I put everybody where they are supposed to be", said Jackson.

The Pirates took control in the first half through Jackson attacking the rim, timely shooting from Claire Lundberg, and aggressive defense by the captains LaTecia Smith and Kaity Healy.

Seton Hall held a 19 point lead with four minutes to go in the first half, but Philadelphia would pull themselves back into the contest, reducing the lead to 11 by halftime, and then nine right out of the break.

That would be as close as they would get, as the Pirates then began to get to the free throw line, slowly padding their lead before it eventually grew to twenty by the end of the third.

Shadeen Samuels would play a part in the second half, scoring some timely shots, as well as Lundberg who hit two threes in the fourth quarter to finish three of six from behind the arc. Jackson as well finished 50 percent from three point range, making four of eight from behind the arc.

The Pirates will be back in Walsh Gymnasium on Friday for the first regular season match against Savannah State. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. and all action can be heard live on the home for Seton Hall women's basketball, 89.5 FM, WSOU.
