By Michael Daly

Seton Hall lost to the Marquette Golden Eagles in three straight sets, 3-0 at Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday night.

The first set started out very well for the Pirates as they led the Golden Eagles 10-6. Haylee Gasser accounted for three kills during the team’s 10-6 run. The Golden Eagles marched back as they tied the set up 12-12 with a kill by Hope Werch. Marquette then took the lead when Allie Barber recorded a kill. Seton Hall trailed Marquette for the remainder of the set, as Marquette went on to win the first set 25-19.

In the second set, Allie Barber of Marquette had two early kills and her Golden Eagles captured an early 5-3 lead on the Pirates. Seton Hall took an 11-10 lead thanks to consecutive attack errors by Barber. A kill from Barber then tied the set at 12 and the Golden Eagles had control for the rest of the way in the second set. Down by six points at the end of the set, Abby Thelen recorded a kill to make it a 24-19 match. Anna Haak’s kill was able to win the middle set for Marquette 25-19.

With the Pirates down 2-0 in the match, Sophia Coffey’s service ace gave the Pirates the first point of the set, but Marquette snatched the lead due to attack errors by Abby Thelen and Caitlin Koska. Marquette once again maintained control for the rest of the set and had a 20-14 lead over the Pirates when Werch recorded a kill. The Hall capitalized on service and attack errors by Marquette, and were able to come within three points of the Golden Eagles, 22-19. Marquette went on to win the third and final set 25-22, and the match 3-0.

Thelen had a team high 10 kills for the Pirates. Koska added another seven kills to the box score, and Haylee Gasser recorded six kills during the match.

Despite the loss, head coach Ally Yaeger was very positive when speaking on playing 19th ranked Marquette. "The fact that we got 19,19, and 22 points was good. We probably scored the most points against them than any other team in the country besides Creighton. They're the best serving team in the country and our serve-receive was spot on tonight."

The loss gives Seton Hall a 2-7 conference record, and a 7-15 record overall. Coach Yaeger addressed areas to work on for her team, saying "I felt that our offense struggled tonight which is not like us. We just need to be consistent."

The Pirates look to bounce back next Friday night when they host Georgetown at 7 PM in Walsh Gymnasium.
